Obituary Of Sean Dougherty, Utica, NY, Longtime Resident Has Suddenly Died

Sean Dougherty Obituary, Death – On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Lt. Sean Michael Dougherty, Ret. UPD, 44, passed away suddenly at home. On July 4, 1979, Sean was born in Utica to Duffy and Rose Mary (Palmisano) Dougherty. After graduating from Notre Dame High School in 2001, he went on to acquire a bachelor’s degree from Siena College. After returning, he earned his diploma from the Utica Police Academy. Sean has held a number of positions with the Utica Police Department since joining on October 8, 2001. From patrol officer to sergeant to lieutenant, he advanced.

He scrupulously upheld agency rules, regulations, and statutes in the Professional Standards Unit in order to preserve professionalism. Sean devoted his life to that role, and his efforts have resulted in numerous current protocols. The director of the Mohawk Valley Crime Analysis Center was his final position prior to retirement. For the UPD and three other nearby counties, the facility is essential. He oversaw day-to-day operations at the center and provided prompt, correct responses to government requirements. Leading the center’s sworn and civilian staff was him. In October 2021, Sean announced his retirement from the community after twenty years of guarding and serving it.

After leaving the UPD, Sean was a good fit for his new position as Assistant Director and Lead Investigator for Campus Safety at Colgate University. For Sean, family and friends had equal significance. Everyone admired his calm, amiable demeanor. He laughed and smiled while constantly lending a hand. Sean was always helpful, considerate, and nice to others. He was always a hero first, then a gentleman. Sean was well-read, industrious, tidy, and appreciative of opulence. Sean learned more about a pastime he enjoyed. Sean was a born athlete who led his team to the MAAC title in football, hockey, and Division 1 collegiate baseball. He also excelled as a goal tender in hockey.

He complimented his father on his athletic and law enforcement prowess. Sean loved the Bills, loved them. His strong bond with his grandfather, a military man, made him a voracious reader of historical fiction, particularly works on World War II. Sean was most proud of being a father, despite his success in both his personal and professional life. Leaving him are his sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Paul Reittinger; his devoted daughter, Alexa; and their daughter, Sophie Rebecca, whom Sean adored. Sean also leaves behind his loving parents, Duffy and Rose Mary Dougherty. Jeff Almstead and his late wife Rebecca, Cindy Morgan and her late husband Dave, Mark Salamida, Roger Perta, godmother Ann Marie Corleto, her husband Dan, and their children grieve his passing.

Other mourners include aunts and uncles Cynthia and Jeff Cohen, Chuck and Palma Dougherty, Cheryl Ewing, Chet and Debbie Dougherty, David Simbari and his children Stephanie and Stephen, Ann and Tom Wolanski and their children Sara, Leah, and Michelle, and Jeff Almstead and his late wife Rebecca. Rainer Kohlbrenner was one of Sean’s many close pals; he was to him like a brother. Chester A. and Joan (Potocki) Dougherty, his paternal grandparents, and John A. and Rita E. (Salamida) Palmisano, his maternal grandparents, passed away before him. His life will be discreetly celebrated by the family.

On Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 3:00 p.m., Sean’s Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life will take place at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Lourdes Campus, 2222 Genesee St. Friends and family are cordially invited. The Utica Police Department will pay tribute to their colleague. Envelopes for memorial contributions to the education trust fund of Sean’s daughter Alexa will be available at the service. Calvary Cemetery burials will be decided by family convenience.
