Seeing Doug’s radiant smile as he proudly won an award at a car show is a sight that will remain imprinted in my memory forever. This is when Doug’s love for vehicles really shown through, and he was completely at ease. While Doug was an auditor at State Farm, I was a young estimator when I first started out in the business at age 21. Without a doubt, he was a hard man. Meeting his high expectations was no easy feat. Because of his obsession with detail, I recall feeling irritated and even furious on occasion.
In hindsight, though, I see that Doug’s resiliency was really a boon. He was trying to teach me the value of professionalism and meticulousness by making sure all paperwork was in place, not merely to ensure compliance. I was driven to excel by Doug’s rigorous audits, which helped me to fully grasp the industry’s processes and procedures. My view of Doug shifted from that of an enemy to that of a mentor as I progressed through my career; he was the one who encouraged me to reach my full professional potential.
His teachings were priceless, albeit they weren’t always easy to hear. My work ethic, desire to excellence, and drive for constant growth were all greatly influenced by Doug’s guidance as a mentor. The methods and standards that Doug taught me remain with me to this day. Doug taught me the importance of thorough file documentation, and now I teach others to do the same. I also make sure that my staff and I always act professionally.
As a friend as well as a mentor, Doug was invaluable. Beyond our professional relationship, his influence on my life and career was profound, and I will be eternally grateful to him for everything that he did to help. His impact on so many people ensures that his memory will endure long after he has gone. I find solace in the knowledge that my mentor and friend’s impact will endure to direct me in my professional and personal endeavors, even as I grieve his passing. Doug, I hope you rest in peace. You had a profound impact on my career development. Although we shall miss you greatly, your memory will endure in perpetuity.
